Good oral hygiene after a dental procedure is crucial. Avoid brushing the operated side until the sutures have been removed. To prevent infection, you should rinse your mouth twice a day with a disinfectant mouthwash such as Corsodyl or Perio-Aid 0.12%. Rinse for 30 seconds each time, undiluted.
Slight post-operative bleeding after a tooth or implant procedure is normal and can last for several hours. Avoid repeated rinsing during this period, as this can worsen the bleeding. If bleeding persists, you can usually stop it by biting firmly on a compress or a clean cotton cloth for 15 to 20 minutes. Try to avoid hot drinks.
Pain may occur after surgical treatment. You can manage this with Paracetamol (1 g, maximum four times a day) and/or Ibuprofen (600 mg, maximum three times a day), unless your dentist advises otherwise. Always follow the prescribed dosage.
Swelling after a procedure is common. By applying ice or a cold compress (wrapped in a towel) to the cheek immediately after treatment, you can limit swelling and bruising. It is also recommended to sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first night.
In some cases, your periodontist will prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection. This course usually starts on the morning of the procedure and typically consists of Amoxicillin 500 mg, three times a day for five days. Always follow your practitioner’s instructions carefully.
If you wear a dental prosthesis, it usually cannot be worn temporarily over the treated jaw after the procedure. After approximately one week, your dentist can adjust the prosthesis, after which you can use it comfortably again.
Sutures are generally removed between 7 and 14 days after the procedure. It is normal for them to become somewhat loose in the meantime. If necessary, they can be carefully removed from 4 to 5 days after the procedure. If in doubt, you can always contact your dentist.
Extra precautions are necessary following a sinus lift. For six weeks after the procedure, it is best to avoid activities that cause pressure on the sinus, such as flying, diving, or playing a wind instrument. Sneezing is permitted, but try to do so without building up pressure.
For proper wound healing, it is important to temporarily adjust your diet. Avoid highly spiced foods and alcoholic beverages for two weeks. You can otherwise eat normally, but it is best to choose soft foods to prevent food residue from entering the wound.
Smoking is strongly discouraged after a procedure, as it has a negative impact on healing and the integration of implants. In healthy conditions, the success rate is 94 to 96%, while this can drop to approximately 70% for smokers. Quitting or temporarily pausing smoking therefore significantly increases the chance of a successful treatment.
During your treatment, anonymous radiographic images and clinical photographs may be taken with your consent. These may be used for medical education or scientific research. You can always request these images from your practitioner.
