Specialized periodontology treatment at Paro Merchtem

With respect for what Mother Nature has created, we primarily strive to maintain this complexity. If this proves impossible, we still use this image as our blueprint.

Specialized
tailored treatments

Our practice is exclusively focused on specialized treatments that fall under three major categories: periodontology, implantology, and mucogingival surgery.

Usually, an initial consultation will be scheduled to gather all clinical and radiological information essential for drawing up a treatment plan. During this process, we listen carefully to your wishes.

In addition to discussing the various treatment options, including the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure, we also review potential complications and the expected costs. This ensures that you, as a patient, do not face any surprises.

PERIODONTOLOGY

Periodontology is the field of study dedicated to all tissues surrounding the tooth that not only provide structural support but also establish a necessary biological seal in the bacteria-rich mouth.

When problems begin to arise, we refer to it as gingivitis. This is often characterized by bleeding, swelling, or mild redness of the soft tissues.

If left untreated, this will progress into periodontitis, where the surrounding jawbone has also become affected.

Just as in other branches of healthcare, prevention forms the cornerstone of a healthy mouth.

Because periodontal diseases often do not cause clear pain, they are unfortunately often discovered late. Therefore, do not be embarrassed to discuss this with your dentist. Thanks to their expert judgment and timely referral, you will reach us at the right moment, before the problem becomes serious.

However, we would like to point out that prevention primarily starts with you. In addition to good daily oral hygiene, with a correct brushing technique and regular interdental cleaning (usually dental floss or interdental brushes), sufficient exercise, healthy nutrition, and avoiding harmful habits (smoking and excessive sugar consumption) also play an important role.

The removal of a tooth is never pleasant. Nevertheless, we do everything possible to make this process as comfortable as possible.

From this care-oriented approach, we like to immediately consider a sustainable long-term solution.

For instance, we may sometimes decide to retain your terminal tooth for a while so that it continues to correctly support the periodontal tissues while awaiting your new implant-supported solution.

Our practice is geared towards ensuring your orthodontic trajectory, during which teeth are uprighted, proceeds as smoothly as possible. In addition to the professional removal of labial frenula, also known as a “frenulum” procedure, we also focus on the removal of impacted elements and the exposure of impacted teeth that do not erupt spontaneously. Through a minor surgical procedure, performed using open or closed guidance, we support your orthodontist in the further progress of this trajectory.

Discuss with your orthodontist or treating dentist whether such a surgical intervention is indicated before an appointment is scheduled. After a correct assessment, we will be happy to schedule the discussed procedure for you quickly and efficiently.

The basic intervention to achieve periodontal stability is a thorough deep cleaning. In addition to the excess of bacteria, the deeper position (under the gums) and the specific nature of the bacterial species often pose a challenge.

After completing these sanitization appointments (often in two stages), your body is given sufficient time to recover. Usually, a period of 2 to 3 months is factored in before we evaluate your status. During this check-up appointment, we see if certain problem areas still need to be addressed and plan the continuation of your rehabilitation trajectory.

If we cannot establish periodontal stability, we review and plan minimally invasive interventions together. These can be divided into two major groups:

  1. The regenerative approach, where augmentations are performed in places where bone or tissue defects are present.
  2. The resective approach, where inflamed tissue is minimally removed and the jaw contour is restored.

After reaching periodontal stability, where we can establish that your jawbone and gums are healthy, the process is not yet complete.

Your own commitment, together with periodic check-ups at both the dentist and with us, aims to maintain your achieved oral health in the long term and thus reduce or even prevent the need for future treatments.

Implantology

A lost tooth can be replaced by a dental implant. This titanium screw integrates into your own bone and thus replaces the lost tooth root. A crown, bridge, or denture can then be attached on top, restoring both chewing function and the smile. In our practice, implants are placed exclusively by certified implantologists.

Nowadays, implants have a survival rate of 95 to 99%. However, certain factors can negatively influence this percentage, such as substandard oral hygiene, smoking, gingivitis or periodontitis, immunity problems, uncontrolled diabetes, or treatment with bisphosphonates.

Your specialist will be happy to discuss these risk factors with you personally.

A careful 3D evaluation and planning is always required before we can proceed with the actual placement of your dental implant. We would be happy to discuss your specific situation and wishes together. Following this, we will prepare a cost estimate.

The advent of dental implants represented a massive revolution within dentistry. Further developments have not stood still either. Thanks to continuous innovation, implants can now be placed in regions with little bone, a nearby sinus (the cavity under the eyes), or other obstructing factors.

By means of small to medium-sized augmentations with hard (bone) or soft (gum) tissue, an ideal foundation can be reconstructed. The desired tooth construction can then be manufactured on this foundation.

As our old motto once sounded, so it still sounds today:

Our passion: “we go to the bone”

Our modesty: “we let others put the crown on the work”

Although we sometimes perform certain prosthetic intermediate phases, we are happy to refer you to your treating (prosthetic) dentist for the manufacture of the final crown or prosthetic provision. After each step, we provide a full report so that your dentist always remains perfectly informed of your treatment progress with us.

Mucogingival

Although this branch within our field can be considered relatively new, it is our flagship. Together with you and your treating dentist, we strive for a natural and harmonious end result, where functionality and aesthetic refinement meet. After careful planning, we bring the soft tissue specifically to the correct position. Depending on the need, this may mean that we remove a certain zone of soft tissue (crown lengthening) or indeed add tissue (covering exposed tooth necks).

Suggestions?

Do you have a suggestion, remark, compliment, or complaint? We would like to hear it. You can always pass them on to us. This can be done in our dental practice itself, but also via email (info@paromerchtem.be) or by telephone (052 37 07 41). We are happy to assist you.
